Bird-Kultgen Ford is Waco

Our story begins with two men: Arthur Bird and Jack Kultgen. Arthur Bird was a businessman who set up supermarkets during the time when there were still many “mom and pop” shops. Jack Kultgen was a WWI veteran from Michigan, who was sent to Ellington Field in Texas for flight training, and after the war ended, decided to stay when he met his future wife, Reba.  Jack started selling cars, and his first hurdle was teaching prospective customers to drive the model T. Jack and Arthur joined together and purchased Duncan-Smith Ford, which Jack would run.  In October 1936, Bird-Kultgen Ford officially opened its doors on 5 th Street - a building that today is used as a garage for the McLennan County Record Building. more Business coming out of the great depression was tough for the first several years, but Jack and team fought through it.  Jack continued to run the dealership when his two sons went off to fight in WWII.  The war brought on economic difficulty when car production halted, but we made it through. When the war was over business boomed, and we soon outgrew our facility.  In 1947, Bird-Kultgen Ford moved to its second location on Franklin Avenue. The state-of-the-art building was one of the first in Waco to have air conditioning, and thousands came just to “feel the refrigerated air!” The business continued to grow, and through the years Jack gave much of himself to the city of Waco, the state of Texas, and the automobile industry. Some of them include: First President of The Brazos River Authority Chairman of the Baylor Stadium Drive Fund Chairman of capital campaign to help save Providence hospitals Chairman of capital campaign for Hillcrest hospital Chairman of the Texas State Highway Commission Driving force in construction of LaSalle, Valley Mills, Waco Drive, I-35 Leader for building of the Waco Dam In charge of sugar and other rations for the state for WWII First Caucasian board member for Paul Quinn College Helped charter TSTC, first chairman of the board of regents Jack’s legacy was honored in this video for the Waco chamber Legacy Award. Today we continue Jack’s legacy of community service through our Bird-Kultgen Cares program. We are grateful for those who have become part of our “extended family”—especially our customers who have visited the dealership for generations, bringing their families and friends with them. As a pillar of this community, we have stood through wars, economic downturns, and hard times, and will continue to stand because of our dedication to our employees, our customers, and our community. We appreciate you taking some time to learn more about our history.  Bird-Kultgen Ford and Waco, TX have a rich history, and the shared promise of a bold and exciting future.    When you think Waco, Texas, think Bird-Kultgen Ford.  We are Waco.

From Factory to Dealership

There are few names that symbolize American ingenuity and innovation quite like Ford. For more than 100 years, Ford has provided America (and indeed, the entire world) with dependable and forward-thinking vehicles. more The reality is that there’s probably no one in the country that hasn’t heard of Ford, but there are far fewer people who understand the entire process of putting one of these vehicles together and delivering it to the public. As it turns out, the amount of work that goes into creating and delivering a single vehicle is far more involved than many people realize; driving a car off the dealership lot is simply the final link in a long supply chain. Assembling Ford Vehicles Ford sells cars across the entire globe; from a logistics standpoint, it stands to reason that these traditionally American made vehicles are sometimes assembled in other parts of the world now. That said, it’s worth noting that about 65% of Fords are still made in the U.S. and Canada, a testament to the company’s distinctly American roots. The company itself is still headquartered in Michigan, but Ford has 65 different plants worldwide, many of which are located in North America. What goes on inside these plants is a subject steeped in history in and of itself, and one that continues to evolve in this modern era. In the 20th century, Ford helped to pioneer a now famous concept called the assembly line. Because the company adopted this method of assembling their vehicles piece by piece very early, they were able to start creating the first Ford vehicle (the Model T) in just over 90 minutes—a span of time so short it didn’t previously seem possible. It was around this same time that Ford became one of the first companies to ensure its employees were paid a livable wage, and that they didn’t work so many hours that they were causing themselves lasting physical damage. Ford understood that employees who receive adequate pay and rest will be more efficient in the long run than ones who are overworked and underpaid. Of course, back in those early days, there wasn’t much of the assembly process that could be automated; that has changed materially in the last 100+ years. Today, Ford vehicles are assembled from nine core platforms, and each plant only produces a handful of models as opposed to assembling the entire Ford lineup in every factory. This is obviously a move to increase efficiency. By limiting the models produced in a single plant, Ford is able to limit the different parts and procedures that must be utilized there. This allows machines and their engineers to become extremely adept at assembling vehicles, churning out more completed vehicles with fewer issues in less time. As things like 3D printing and digital twins have become more common in the manufacturing space, Ford has maintained its spirit of innovation, diving headfirst into technological advancements. These advancements have made it easier for Ford to reach new levels of efficiency that Henry Ford and his contemporaries never dreamed possible. That said, the landscape of Ford assembly has changed significantly in the last century. While workers used to assemble Fords by hand at the line, they now monitor machines that do the heavy lifting for them. There are certain processes that are still completed by humans directly, though, as some things simply require a personal touch and inspection. Completing Quality Control Once a Vehicle in Assembled Every driver on the road should take comfort knowing that cars, Fords included, aren’t simply assembled then carted off to dealerships. After the individual components are assembled, the body is constructed, the vehicle is painted, and the interior is created, the car then moves off of the assembly line for a quality control inspection. Because there are various checkpoints for quality throughout the assembly process, the final quality control inspection is generally quite simple; it usually ensures that everything is fitting together properly, and that there are no unusual noises or alerts. This is also the point at which the VIN (vehicle identification number) is assigned to the car. In days of old, the entire quality control process was left to this final stage, but manufacturers eventually realized that they could more thoroughly vet vehicles if they inspected them throughout the assembly process. This protects drivers and manufacturers from unnecessary dangers and the burden of recalls. Once a Ford has been properly assembled and the quality has been checked, it is ready to complete the next step in its journey to the dealership: the actual journey from the plant to the lot. Making Sure The Right Vehicles Reach The Right Dealerships There’s nothing random about which Fords end up on local dealerships’ lots—Ford doesn’t simply send a set number of cars to each dealership. Instead, each dealership (there are about 4,000 of them in the U.S.) orders a specific number of specific models; following the assembly process, Ford has to assess which cars they need to send to which regions. The result is a complicated web of logistics that requires a great deal of manpower to manage. Put simply, though, Fords are first loaded up on the most convenient transportation method and transported to their regional destinations. Usually, this means that the new vehicles are placed on a train, and taken by rail to a distribution facility, but boats and airplanes can be used for this first step as well. It might seem odd that vehicles are loaded on to other vehicles to reach dealerships, but new cars can’t be considered new if they come with wear and tear right from the start; plus, it’s far cheaper to transport vehicles in bulk than to hire drivers to get each car to its destination. After a crop of Fords reaches a regional distribution facility, individual orders are loaded onto car haulers. Most anyone who has spent time on a highway has seen one of these unusual vehicles— most hauler trucks can hold about ten vehicles when fully loaded, and they usually only need to drive a couple hundred miles at most to get those vehicles to their dealerships. This system of transporting vehicles by rail to the region of their destination, then transferring them to trucks for the remainder of their trip is one that has been perfected over many years. The cost of getting the cars from the factory to the dealership is passed on, in part, to the consumers, so it’s in everyone’s best interest that these shipping costs are kept low. The excitement of purchasing a new car sometimes outweighs the gravity of just how much work has gone into producing it, assembling it, and transporting it. Ford has relentlessly worked for more than 100 years to provide drivers with the best possible experience, and their vehicles’ trek from plant to dealership is only likely to get more streamlined as time marches forward.

Jack Palmer

Meet Jack Palmer

No matter your age or longevity in the automotive industry the excitement of getting a new car never gets old especially when it’s your first brand-new car! We are so excited for Jack Palmer and his wife, Sharon, on the purchase of a 2019 Ford Escape. Jack has worked at Bird Kultgen since 1972 when he asked his grandfather, Jack Motes, if he could help him secure a summer job. Motes, who ended up working for Bird Kultgen for 30 years, helped Jack attain a job in the newly opened freight department. more An insightful man, Jack realized he could climb the ranks from unloading freight to a position with greater responsibility if he learned to look up parts inventory and assist with mechanics. He was promoted to the parts department shortly after starting and then again to the front counter in 1980. This was a worrying move for him, but momentous. At that time, Mr. (Jack) Kultgen wanted to ensure Bird-Kultgen Ford was accommodating clientele from all races and backgrounds and make certain that all people felt comfortable coming in to the dealership.  He knew Jack Palmer was the perfect fit.  With his contagious positive attitude and upbeat disposition, Jack naturally brings joy to everyone around him. Jack’s initial summer job turned into a prosperous career as life events unfolded. He married his beautiful wife three short weeks after graduating high school and starting at Bird Kultgen. He has now been married for 47 wonderful years and has 5 grown boys and 2 beautiful grandchildren. He is incredibly thankful for the support the Kultgen’s have provided him, especially through the industry’s economic downturns and life’s challenges. Jack is an instrumental part of Bird Kultgen; he has worked with all the Kultgen’s in his tenure at the dealership and recalls fondly when Peter Kultgen first started working summers. We are incredibly grateful to have Jack as part of the family and wish him all the best with his new 2019 Ford Escape!

Is Your Car Safe for Kids? How to Make Your Vehicle Baby-Friendly on a Budget

Imagine this: You’re leaving the hospital with your newborn, but when you get to your car, you realize it’s nowhere near safe enough for your precious cargo. If you want to avoid major new parent guilt loading your baby into a car that’s unsafe, you need to get your vehicle baby-friendly before giving birth. Don’t worry — even if you don’t have a lot to spend, you can pull it off. Read on for ideas that will make your car safer. more Upgrade Your Car Before welcoming your first child, take a look at your car. Is it in good condition with modern safety features and easy car seat access? If you’re driving a two-door car or a clunker constantly on the verge of a breakdown, trade it in for something better suited to family life. You don’t have to trade your coupe for a minivan, but you do need a vehicle with four doors, essential safety features, and no major mechanical problems. Maintaining a road-worthy car doesn’t have to cost a fortune. Used cars are much more affordable than new, and as long as you do your homework when buying, you can avoid cars with major problems. If you learn how to do your own basic car maintenance, like changing automotive fluids and filters, you’ll spend a lot less maintaining your vehicle. Check major retailers like Walmart for deals on car parts and supplies. You can also save on repairs and maintenance by looking for Groupon coupon codes at places like Rakuten. You may find Groupon deals for local auto care centers, oil changes, batteries, and car tires. Should You Splurge on Premium Features? Kid-friendly features like infotainment systems, built-in sunshades, and integrated vacuums are hugely popular with parents, but are they worth paying thousands more for a car? For parents on a budget, there are cheaper ways to achieve the same amenities. Cordless hand vacuums start around $30 and are compact enough to store in the cargo area, while tablets and handheld toys do the job of headrest multimedia screens at a fraction of the price. Even your phone can be a great tool in the car. While you shouldn’t talk or text behind the wheel, you can use free GPS apps to get around without paying for built-in navigation and soothe your baby with a Spotify playlist instead of splurging on an XM radio subscription. Most smartphones have the ability to sync with cars via Bluetooth or built-in smartphone integration for hands-free usage. Apple’s phones include a Do Not Disturb While Driving feature that ensures you won’t be tempted by notifications. Similarly, Android phones come equipped with Android Auto, which employs a simplified, voice-activated interface while driving. Saving Money on Child Safety Restraints Car seats are non-negotiable when driving with kids in the car. The new recommendation to keep children in rear-facing car seats as long as possible means you have more time before you have to worry about replacing your baby’s car seat, but still, car seat costs add up. To save, buy a convertible car seat that will grow with your child, or keep an eye out for car seat trade-in events at stores like Target, where you can get a coupon or gift card to use for your new car seat. Most experts advise against buying used car seats because once a car seat expires or is in an accident, it’s no longer safe to use. If a used car seat is all you can afford, only buy a secondhand car seat that’s less than six years old and that you’re 100% certain has never been recalled. You don’t need to rush out and buy a brand-new minivan with all the trimmings just because you’re expecting. However, there are some basic safety standards your car needs to meet before bringing your baby home. By taking these budget-friendly steps, you can make your first family drive knowing your precious cargo is safe as can be.

Bird Kultgen takes great pride in having the best employees. Our culture is built around family, respect, hard work and success. Due to this many of our employees have been here for several decades. Each year we take the time to honor one employee for their hard work and dedication. The 2019 winner was selected by our leadership team based on the following criteria: helpful, compassionate, driven, positive, and excellent at their job. more We are very honored to announce our 2019 Employee of the Year: Annette Landrum! Born and raised in Boerne, Texas, and joining our BK team 5 years ago, this employee and her husband have 3 kids, 2 little grandbabies, and loves Texas. Serving as the dispatcher in our service team, Annette is tasked with getting every service repair order written up and sent through to the shop as quickly and efficiently as possible. By intuitively pairing each RO to a technician with the perfect skill set and experience to do the job, this employee has found a method for working many repair orders simultaneously and seamlessly into the shop. She juggles multiple things at once, ensuring first and foremost that customers are cared for, technicians stay busy with work, and communication and production is running as proficiently as possible.   This year she dispatched over 21,000 service hours, plus helped manage the workload of Quick Lane and Collision tickets on top of that. She does “the extras”, too!  She helps coordinate the team breakfasts and prepares her very special salsa – yum!  She is always willing and eager to volunteer for a job, no matter how large or small.  She delivers parts to technicians, assists with large repair order analysis, motivates team members and keeps the atmosphere positive and encouraging, and goes above and beyond to meet the needs of our customers. Senior Master Technician Luke says, “Annette is like the work flow Housekeeper, making sure that every customer and repair order is taken care of. She’s always pushing everyone in a positive way.” Tim Pietsch, our used car manager said, “She keeps things moving, always has a positive attitude, and helps us take care of customers and sell cars.” Master Technician Wesley Leggett called her, “The Heart of the Shop”.
